It’s not often you play a game with a few issues that you overlook because the game is just pure, damn fun. That is the Escapists 2 for me, a game that, despite some of its repetitions, is just too much fun NOT to play. While the experience playing solo was pretty entertaining for many hours, playing with friends is really where this game shines.

Escapists 2

Like in the original release, the Escapists 2 has you attempting to break out of numerous prisons scattered around the globe. Different prisons have different layouts, and although the routine in each is fairly constant, there are little wrinkles that will make you adjust your strategy. Right off the bat, however, you realize how much this second release builds on the first. For myself, it was instantly noticeable in the quick tutorial you can play through to learn the basics of the game. While the first release also had something similar, it wasn’t as straight forward and easy to understand as this sequel. It’s quick, it’s informative, and its definitely the way to start, regardless of your comfort level with the concept.

Once you’ve been locked up in whatever prison you chose to play – and trust me, there is lots of content here for a very affordable price – you’ll need to spend the first few days understanding the prison’s routine, knowing who your inmates are, and seeing which inmates you want to interact with to score items, and which you want to avoid all together.

Escapists 2

Then comes the planning phase. After all, the goal of the Escapists 2 is not to make friends in prison, but rather, to get out. What’s great about this title is there isn’t just one way to escape. In fact, once you’ve finished playing all the prisons available in the game, you could easily go back and see what other ways you could possibly get out. Using a combination of tools, weapons, and charm, you will need to climb, dig, our coerce your way out of sticky situations, and ultimately, out of prison.

The game works really, really well. Understandably, you are in prison, so there are daily routines you are expected to follow. While this could get boring and repetitive for some, it’s finding the right moments to work on your escape plan for 2-3 minutes that is exhilarating for others. Every situation allows for some exploration or planning, whether it’s lunch, roll call, or doing chores around the prison.

Escapists 2

As fun as the single player experience is, you’ve not experienced the Escapists 2 until you’ve spent time playing with friends. The laughs you will share with friends as you work together to escape is only part of the fun; strategic thinking with others around you cannot be underestimated. As we are all different in our thoughts, having a group of 4 planning an escape will always be more beneficial than one, as people have different ideas and plan that could lead to success, or often times, failure.

If it wasn’t already apparent, are recommendation is for you to purchase this game. For the price, you won’t find anything else similar on the market that will provide this much content for you to dig into. If you have multiple friends who would also play this title, your experience will be enhanced that much more!
