Nintendo just announced that it has purchased Next Level Games, the developers behind titles like Luigi’s Mansion 3, Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon, and the Super Mario Strikers series. Nintendo’s announcement says the deal is expected to be concluded in March, and “will serve to secure the availability of NLG development resources for Nintendo.” NLG’s history of working directly with Nintendo dates back to the studio’s earliest days when it released Super Mario Strikers on the GameCube in 2005. It's hard to really gauge the popularity of specific LEGO sets because so many are produced for consumption. Sure, in unique scenarios, very specific sets sell out, and they sell out quickly. Think about the $800+ LEGO Millennium Falcon, for example. But LEGO Super Mario has always been available, with a few sets going out of stock early on, only to be plentiful now. Things must be going well, however, as LEGO moves to release even more sets in 2021.

The rumors have been rampant this year that Nintendo would be doing a lot to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Super Mario, but what we got today was above and beyond what anyone probably thought. When LEGO and Nintendo first announced the LEGO Super Mario line-up of building block sets, I was incredibly skeptical. Instead of traditional LEGO minifigure sized sets, LEGO opted to created more interactive experience with large, chunky character and figures to play with. And from early reviews across the board - from brick review companies to video game review companies - reviews of the toys have been surprisingly good, pushing me to buy up any stock I can! There is one problem though - I cannot find local stock.

Last week, Nintendo released Super Mario Maker 2, the sequel to the sensational course-creation game in the Super Mario universe. Although I've always enjoyed the Mario Party franchise - mostly because it allows all my family to come together for one great evening of gaming - the past few releases in the franchise have been a bit subpar for me. Every Nintendo Generation as of late has had an epic Super Mario adventure - 2 on the Wii! - so when Nintendo announces a Mario title, you assume it's the only one you'll get in the generation. Super Mario 64 on Nintendo 64, Super Mario Sunshine on GameCube, a pair of Super Mario Galaxy titles on Wii, Super Mario 3D World on Wii U, and now the pinnacle of them all: Super Mario Odyssey on Nintendo Switch. Odyssey spans the history of the whole series, from the 80s to today. And it is so, so good!

During the days of the Nintendo Wii, people could not get enough of the original Mario Galaxy, prompting Nintendo to do something they've rarely ever done with 3D Mario titles: release a sequel! Unfortunately for me, neither Mario Galaxy or Mario Galaxy 2 hit that sweet spot for me like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine did. In fact, nothing Nintendo has released for Mario has brought me back mentally to the days of the Gamecube and Nintendo 64. Super Mario Odyssey is about to change that in a big way for me, and I cannot wait!
