More Thoughts From Me #62: Alas, Playstation 3

Recently, I heard that Sony would be discontinuing the Playstation 3 in Japan. Its amazing that it took them this long, what with the Playstation 4 doing so well. I use to own the system, but traded mine in awhile back. I still miss the Playstation 3 to this day. There were a lot of wonderful games on the system. I thought that now would be a great time to look back at my Playstation 3 memories and the games I liked on the system.

I wasn’t sold on the Playstation 3 at first. I had owned a Playstation 1 and a Playstation 2, but the Playstation 3 didn’t interest me and I went with the Xbox 360 instead. However, there came a time when I had to trade my 360 in and eventually I started thinking about another gaming system. It wasn’t until I played Ratchet & Clank Future that I was sold on the Playstation 3.

I was at a Walmart one day and they had a Playstation 3 hooked up. Ratchet & Clank Future was the demo on the system. I had always loved the Ratchet & Clank franchise but this game was even better than anything I’d seen before from the franchise. I was blown away by Future’s graphics and gameplay. I had previously played Uncharted 1 on a Playstation 3 and liked it, but I loved Ratchet & Clank Future. I knew that I had to have a Playstation 3.

Eventually, I got a Playstation 3 and Ratchet & Clank Future. I was hooked. The Playstation 3 had a great controller and a nice menu interface. The online was free too, unlike the 360. The Playstation 3 was one of my favorite systems for awhile.

One of my favorite things about the Playstation 3 were the free online betas that you could get into. I had never experienced that on the 360 and of course Nintendo didn’t do that. The first Beta I ever got into was LittleBigPlanet. While that beta was a bit glitchy at first, I loved the game anyway. Building levels and sharing them online was great. I also enjoyed playing levels with others, especially friends. I bought LittleBigPlanet when it came out and played it a lot.

The first LittleBigPlanet was amazing. It was so easy to create levels and best of all, there were so many people that were talented at making levels. If you were bored, you could just play LittleBigPlanet and you were sure to find a cool level or two.

I did get into the LittleBigPlanet 2 beta also and enjoyed that. I also bought the Special Edition version of LittleBigPlanet 2, one of the few times I have ever bought a special edition. I still have the Sackboy and book ends that came with the special edition! I liked LittleBigPlanet 2 but didn’t love it as much as the first one. It was taking forever for people to get use to building levels in the new game and the magic of the first game wasn’t there with the second.

LittleBigPlanet betas were not the only ones I got into though. I played both Uncharted 2 and 3 betas, I played the Modnation Racers beta, the Ratchet & Clank All 4 One beta and the Killzone 2 beta. Out of those betas, I liked the Uncharted 2 & 3 betas the best. Uncharted’s online multiplayer was a blast! Of course, the single player in the actual games were awesome too.

I was a big fan of the Uncharted series. I especially loved the second and third one. I don’t have a Playstation 4 so I totally missed out on Uncharted 4. sigh. The Uncharted games are just so great because it feels like you are playing a movie. I say that in the best of ways. It really feels like you are part of the game/movie. Uncharted games are just incredible.

There are so many games that I played for the Playstation 3. I know I’m forgetting some of them. Oh and I should mention Playstation Home!

I liked Playstation Home. I know there were a lot of people who didn’t like it or thought it could have been so much better. And yes, it could have better but I enjoyed what we did get out of it. I love sim games and so I really liked the sim aspects of Home. I enjoyed getting a free house or sometimes purchasing a new home. The furniture you could get for the houses were cool too. I once bought a Solitaire game in Home and thought that was cool. I also liked the areas that you could visit, like the theater and the mall. Playstation Home was pretty neat.

Overall, I had a great time with my Playstation 3. I sometimes regret trading the system in but I needed to do so at the time. Don’t let anyone tell you that the Playstation 3 wasn’t a worthwhile system. It was, in fact, a great system. I still miss it.

Did you have a Playstation 3? What were your favorite games on the system?? What are your favorite memories? Please share them with us in the comments.

Next week: Kingdom’s Item Shop! I love sim games and this is a sim about running an item shop in an rpg kingdom. Is the game any good? You’ll find out what I think next week!

More Thoughts From Me is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed here are mine and mine alone. I have a Playstation 1 again. I really should play it soon!
