I never played the full Rayman Legends game on the Wii U. I played the demo, but I just never got around to playing the full game. Then Ubisoft sent us a review code for this game and our editor-in-chief, Adam Roffel, decided I should do the review. I had played the Switch’s Rayman Legends demo, so I knew that the game played well on the Nintendo Switch, but I was not prepared at all for the full Rayman Legends Definitive experiance. If you’ve read my preview articles, then you have a sense of how much I love this game! Let me tell more about why you should buy this game right away.

Rayman Legends doesn’t have much of a story. People and places are in danger and Rayman must save them is what the story boils down too. However, this game is a platformer so I didn’t expect much. Thankfully, everything else about this game more than makes up for its lack of story.

There are a ton of modes in Rayman Legends Definitive Edition. The main mode that you’ll play is the story mode. This has you jumping into paintings that take to different worlds and each world has its own level paintings for you to jump into. As I write this, I’m thinking a bit about Super Mario 64, but when you play Rayman Legends, you don’t think of that game at all.

The level design in this game is incredible. When you jump into a level, you just never know what you’ll find. Each and every level in this game is so different from the other. There are so many challenges and fun suprises to be found in Rayman Legends!

My favorite of all the levels you run into is the special musical levels. I will talk about the music of this game more later, but for now, I just want to mention the insanity of these levels. You have to run, jump and slide through these levels quickly. It can be a real challenge but its so much fun! There are a ton of other modes to explore in this game too and you should really do that.

The other modes in this game include a fantastic touch based mode where you play Rayman Legends in handheld mode and use the touch screen and motion controls. There’s also the Rayman Origins levels you can unlock, a local multiplayer mode that I didn’t get to try out, and the Daily and Weekly challenges that use the internet to present you with a different challenge every so often. You can also play as characters that are not Rayman or as Rayman in a special costume! Best of all, the controls in this game work really well throughout all the modes.

The controls in Rayman Legends are one of the reasons that the game works so well. From the touch controls to the button controls, Ubisoft put a lot of thought and precision into this game. Any levels that you find too hard are due to lack of player skill and not lack of good controls. I like how this game really takes advantage of everything the Switch has to offer: touch controls, motion controls, perfect handheld play, and its amazing in docked mode too.

Rayman Legends is a fantastic game from top to bottom and that includes the game’s graphics and music.

Rayman Legends is the best looking game on the Nintendo Switch now. I’m sure that’ll change when Super Mario Odyssey comes out but for the time being, I have to award best graphics to Rayman Legends! This game is jaw droppingly beautiful. Every world and level is unique and incredibly detailed. And the level of detail goes right down to Rayman, his allies, his enemies, and even background creatures. The graphics on this game are fantastic and the game looks great on the TV screen and in handheld mode.

And the music in this game is stunning! I can’t remember the last time that I looked forward to the music in a video game so much. There are other games with really good music but Rayman Legends music is next level good. This is especially obvious in the special musical stages in this game, but theres so much good music in other places too.

The sound effects in this game are also great! The enemies have real personalities thanks to some very nice audio cues. Every jump, every defeated enemy…just basically everything in this game sounds amazing.

Rayman Legends Definitive Edition is a wonderful game and everyone that has a Nintendo Switch should own it.

Rayman Legends Definitive Edition has so many different modes, excellent controls, breathtaking graphics, and a killer soundtrack. To ask for more in a game would be greedy in my opinion.

You absolutely should stop reading this review and go buy Rayman Legends Definitive Edition. It is the best 2D platformer on the Nintendo Switch.

Thanks to Ubisoft Canada for providing a review code of this game. Rayman Legends Definitive Edition is now available at retail and on the Nintendo Switch eshop.
