If you’re looking for a new rpg to play with a old school turn-based rpg vibe, then we may have a game for you. Starlight Legacy is out for the Nintendo Switch today. How is it? Here’s our review!

Starlight Legacy is a turn-based rpg that is inspired by the classics. Its story starts with the main character being dragged along by his best friend to go see the king. From there, they get pulled into a world saving quest.

It’s a little bit more complicated than that but not by much. Starlight Legacy’s story feels like something out of the SNES era, a bit more basic than what we see now but its definitely good old school fun. That’s basically this game overall, including its gameplay and graphics.

In Starlight Legacy, there are turn-based battles are similar to what you found in a classic Final Fantasy game. It’s a very good turn-based system. Its also has some great modern accessibility added to the game.

Starlight has random battles but you can turn them off and on when you want. You can also turn experience leveling up so that you’ll gain levels faster. These are features that we saw in the excellent Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters and a very welcome addition here.

Starlight Legacy also doesn’t have a world map. Instead you wander from towns right into wild areas and then into forests and back again. The areas are connected and a bit more linear and straight forward than the classic SNES rpgs. Some will like this, some will not but it does make it even more friendly to new jrpg players.

If you love old school rpgs, than you’ll feel at home with the game’s controls and its gameplay. If you’ve never played one before, this is a pretty good one to start with. The game doesn’t feel as big as the classics but its well designed and looks good.

The graphics in Starlight Legacy are really good. Character and monster designs are nice. We do wish the characters were bigger on screen but otherwise everything, including the backgrounds are well done.

Overall, Starlight Legacy is a fun game. Its not as big as the classic jrpgs but the combat along with the neat story and nice graphics will draw in fans of the SNES era. That said, with its modern accessibility and its smaller more connected world, it may be something that would be perfect for people who have never played an rpg before. Starlight Legacy is a very good game.

Thanks to Eastasiasoft for providing a digital copy of this game. Starlight Legacy is available today on the Nintendo Switch eshop.
