It’s a Big Week For Games – What Will We See?

It’s a big week for gaming. The Switch 2 is out in just a couple of days, and then we have the Summer Games Fest and the Xbox conference at the weekend. And a Sony show is probably quite close behind. It’s going to be a month of announcements and reviews.

As always, the rumour mill has been working overtime and we have a good idea of some of what we might see over the coming seven days. Naturally, take these with a pinch of salt. We don’t know until we know.

Naturally this piece will contain spoilers for both big events, so back out now if you need to.

Nintendo Switch 2 Reactions

Before we get a single game reveal, we have a major console release. So far we’ve seen little about it that hasn’t come directly from Nintendo, so this will be the week where we get some unbiased opinions.

Expect there to be plenty of sales talk as initial stocks disappear, but also expect mixed reactions to early games. Some will push 4k and 60fps, while others are barely achieving 1080p and 30fps. Those that want it to be the biggest thing since Switch 1 will have all the evidence they need… and so will everybody that wants it to fail.

In the short term there’ll be so much noise we’ll barely know a single thing. But Mario Kart will be fun, right?

Persona 4 Remake

Persona 3 got its remake. It stands to reason that Persona 4 is going to get one too.

There’s been plenty of chatter over this in the last few weeks. A domain name for the supposed remake was discovered and updated, which is how we’ve found out about Persona games before. And voice actors from the original game have been talking it too.

This seems like a nail on Xbox announcement, and it doesn’t seem unreal that we might hear something soon.

Bioshock

Bioshock Infinite came out in 2013 which I’m pretty sure was like five years ago.

12?! Well then it shouldn’t be a surprise that a new one is on the way. The bigger surprise is that it was announced in 2019 and we’ve still seen nothing of it. That might be about to change.

MP1st has heard that 2k is preparing for the announcement, and where better than at the Summer Game Fest or Xbox conference?

I wouldn’t bet my life on it. But it’s about time.

The Wolf Among Us 2

This was a surprise announcement for a number of reasons. The first was that Telltale died in 2018 and the company that was built from the ashes has released one new game and a re-release. The Wolf Among Us 2 was announced in 2019 at… The Game Awards. That’s run by the same team as the Summer Game Fest.

The official Telltale website recently updated its Wolf Among Us page, so something is happening with it. And one way or another, we’ll find out soon.

Resident Evil

We’re overdue a Resident Evil announcement. It’s been a couple of years since Resident Evil 4 and four years since Resident Evil 8. That wouldn’t be terrible for any other franchise, but Resident Evil games release fairly quickly. They’ve had five major games in the last eight years. and rumours about a reveal for the next come and go quite frequently.

I would bet on us knowing about it this year, and I’d consider betting on us knowing about it this month. It’s whether they appear at the Summer Games Fest or the unannounced Sony event.

Final Fantasy IX Remake

This was on the Nvidia leak list and this year is the 25th anniversary of the original PS1 release. Square have been gradually updating their anniversary website with products, art and information, but one thing is missing: the remake.

We’ve had Final Fantasy IX leaks and we kind of know what we’re looking at. We just need an announcement. It wouldn’t be shocking for it to appear in the next week.

Assorted Trailers

There are some things that are so certain they don’t deserve their own section. We’ll be happy to see them anyway.

Expect a decent showing for Death Stranding 2. That game is right on the horizon, and Kojima has a history with the Summer Game/Game Awards.

Lies of P: Overture will get a big trailer with a release date. Little Nightmares 3 will make an appearance. Sonic Racing will reveal some new details, potentially even the rumoured crossover with TMNT and Spongebob (but no Ryu yet…).

We’ll potentially get some Gears of War news, since there are two games on the horizon.

And a word of warning. If you want to make a drinking game, don’t build it around Switch 2 port announcements. I get the feeling you wouldn’t last an hour.

Conclusion

This list is in no way exhaustive. Game announcements will be coming thick and fast and who knows what surprises might be in store? I’ve specifically not mentioned Half Life 3, despite the fact it seems an announcement is on the way. It’s just not worth the disappointment if it doesn’t show.

But this is a good start. There are some big games we know exist and that just haven’t been revealed. This week some of the mystery around these titles will subside, and  we can start looking at what will fill the GTA6-shaped hole now visible at the end of the year.
