More Thoughts From Me #162: The Case of the Missing Sony E3 Conference

Sony announced this year that they will not be at E3. This means no E3 conference at all! Why is Sony doing this? Don’t they have anything to show for the Playstation 4 this year?! Some thoughts and theories below!

Every year at E3: Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo show off games. Sure, you have Ubisoft and EA and some other companies, but the big three are always the most anticipated of E3. Not this year. This year Sony won’t be at E3 (neither will EA). This year Microsoft and Nintendo will be the main attractions. Why is Sony sitting out this E3?

I’ve heard some people say that they think Sony won’t be at E3 this year because this will be a light year for the PS4. The theory is that the Playstation 4 is on its way out and the Playstation 5 is next up. Basically, Sony isn’t at E3 this year because the PS5 isn’t ready to be shown and they don’t have much else to show. Remember last year’s conference? Maybe they don’t want a repeat of last year…

This is a “good” theory, but I’m hoping that these people are as
wrong as those claiming that you can win a fortune with an online
casino bonus.

Sony is bringing out the Last of Us 2 this year, Days Gone, Dreams, and other games. There will be third party games coming to the system too.

I wouldn’t rule the Playstation 4 out yet. Its very possible that Sony will have its own event this year. Either during E3 or after E3 is over. I don’t think Sony would just let the Playstation 4 have a slow year and then next year come back to E3 with the Playstation 5. Its makes sense but I don’t think thats whats going on here.

I should note that I’m usually wrong with my theories. Maybe people are right!

My theory is that Sony saw the reaction that their E3 conference got last year and decided that they wanted to do something different this year. Maybe E3 isn’t worth it for them anymore. Maybe they won’t return to E3 next year. Its possible that we could see Sony do their own Direct like Nintendo. They could have another strategy too.

The Playstation 4 is still the best selling system on the market. Sure, the Nintendo Switch is catching up but there are a lot of PS4 owners out there and there are more all the time. Even when the PS5 comes out, Sony will support the PS4 for awhile. This won’t be a Wii U situation.

Ok, I’ll remind you all that I just bought a PS4 last year. So I’m hoping that I didn’t just buy into the end of the console. Though, even if I did, I don’t regret getting a PS4. I love the system.

I think/hope Sony has their own plan for this year. E3 might eventually “die”. With the internet, companies can talk “directly” to the customer. Do we really need E3 anymore? Maybe Sony and EA have the right idea!

I would miss E3 a lot. I love E3 week. Its a lot of work here at this site but its always fun to watch the conferences, the special E3 Nintendo Direct, and Nintendo Treehouse. I’m going to miss Sony there this year, especially since I just got the PS4. That said, I’d love to be distracted by Sony. I’d love for them to come out during E3 week with an amazing counter strategy.

You know what would be amazing, but I don’t think they’d ever do: have a video online, like a Direct and then release a bunch of PS4 demos for people to play. Here are our upcoming games! Try them out! Wow. That would be a strategy that would distract big time from Nintendo and Microsoft.

Like I said, I don’t think they’ll do that. I’m not sure what Sony has up their sleeve, but I do think they have a magic trick coming.

What do you think? Is the Playstation 4 on its way out? Is the PS4 right around the corner? Or does Sony has something else coming for this wonderful system?

Next week: I’ve been playing Final Fantasy 3 on the DS lately. I’ll talk about what its like to be playing this remake of an old school rpg! It still has its job system and random battles. And you can’t skip the random battles like you could with FF9 on the Switch. Have I been enjoying FF3 DS?

More Thoughts From Me is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed here are mine and mine alone. I’m going to miss Sony at E3 but I can’t wait to see what Nintendo shows! Hopefully lots of Animal Crossing Switch!
