Best RPG Value on Xbox One / PS4 – Elder Scrolls Online

elderscrollsonline_690x388

I’ve been toying with writing up articles on the best valued Video Games in specific categories. I think its worth discussing because as the price of games rises – at least here in Canada, where a new released comes in at 79.99 – 84.99 compared to 59.99 a few years ago – what we can afford as consumers drastically decreases. We go for value in our games. Value for an individual is often not a constant. For one person, an amazing story has lots of value, regardless of how long the game takes. For myself, I take everything into consideration, but my end desire for a game is to have lots to do. While it needs to have a great story and great controls, I want a game with lots of substance. Therefore, if I have 75$, I’m buying The Elder Scrolls Online as my RPG of choice.

For reference, you can find our review of The Elder Scrolls Online here, as well as our look at the DLC here.

If you have ever been a fan of The Elder Scrolls series, you will find lots to love in the Elder Scrolls Online. Even if you are not an MMO person – really, you should get that thought out of your mind if you want to play this – there is still lots to do alone within this game. I’ve been playing almost 75% by myself, and perhaps 25% with my brothers. I don’t engage too much in the larger community, although there are many bonuses to doing so.

All the pillars of a good Elder Scrolls game appear here. Lots of quests, lots of loot, lots of classes, and more will be available to keep you busy. There are islands to explore, dungeons to conquer, and people to save. It all works really well, even if you constantly see other people roaming around the screen with you. These random strangers can often prove helpful in many situations. Having a hard time beating a dungeon boss? Wait for some others to begin engaging the enemy and join in. There is nothing like teamwork. Do your share, and get 100% of the spoils!

The feeling you get from playing an Elder Scrolls game lives on in this online edition. Out side of actually having to connect to a server to begin, you could play 90% of this game as a single player experience. In my first 75 hours of playing, very few dungeons were locked behind a multiple party system – and frankly, don’t even bother attempting a 4 player dungeon alone; you will not succeed. Are there some downsides? Sure, but they are so minimal you probably wouldn’t even consider them negatives.

Bethesda has done a great job supporting this game as well, with two large DLC packs which we review – see above. The amount of content available in the Elder Scrolls Online definitly makes it worthy of getting the Games Reviews distinction of being the BEST value for your money in the RPG genre.
