Square Enix have today confirmed to Eurogamer that the PlayStation 4 version of Thief will run at 1080p, whilst the Xbox One version will run at only 900p. It’s a minor difference in actuality, and one that they say “you really need good eyes to see the difference.”

From Eurogamer:

“You really need good eyes to see the difference,” game director Nicolas Cantin told Eurogamer of the resolution difference between PS4 and Xbox One, before insisting the Xbox One version “is as good as the PS4 version”.

It’s neither surprising nor especially bad, although you can be sure there are people making a big deal over this as I type. The difference in resolution is tiny, especially since that 900p is upscaled to 1080p anyway. While it might mean that somebody who is used to looking for this sort of thing will be able to tell the difference if they’re running side-by-side, few people will ever actually bother to learn to spot the difference between 900p and 1080p, and even fewer will see both versions running alongside one another. In other words: it’s not a big deal.

With Thief being specifically capped at 30FPS, you won’t even be getting a smoother version of Thief if you buy it on PS4, so best bet is to buy on whichever console you feel comfortable on.

Thief will be released on PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One next week.
