After a lengthy wait, CD Projekt RED’s much-anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 was released just a few days ago. With responses being mixed on launch, many players are starting to question if this game deserved the level of attention it received pre-launch and whether or not the game should have been delayed for greater bug testing. We may not be able to answers those questions, but we can offer you insight into the status of the game as it is today and provide our recommendations moving forward. With that out of the way – let’s dive in!

A Brave New World

When a game has been in development for the better part of a decade, it comes with certain expectations. In a game such as Cyberpunk 2077, the main expectation is a thriving, realistic, open world to explore and interact with. On this front, there is no doubt that Cyberpunk 2077 is a resounding success. The open-world aspects of the notorious Night City cannot be denied by even the game’s harshest critics.

The attention to graphical detail is a driving force in this success, as it seems like each individual component of the environment is hand-crafted and worth exploring. An unfortunate side effect of this level of detail is that most mid-high tier PCs and last-gen consoles will struggle to keep up. And with the true-blue version for PS5 and Xbox Series X not arriving until the new-year, Stadia is really your best bet to experience Cyberpunk 2077 without performance issues. The fact that Stadia is now on iPhones is yet another great reason to get the Stadia version.

Lose Yourself In The Moment

A world is nothing without its characters and their stories – and I must admit that Cyberpunk offered a very emotionally rich, albeit short, main storyline. The decision-making can be a little lackluster at times, with many options feeling almost identical, but this is hardly distracting from the otherwise excellent character development.

The short storyline is nicely counterbalanced by an excess of open-world activities that really encourage you to get lost in the fantastic world that CD Projekt RED has created for us. While some of the voice-acting can be a little flat, Keanu Reeves’ character delivers exactly as you would expect him to, which is a cherry on top of this truly great game.

The Only Good Bug Is A Dead Bug

Unfortunately, we cannot avoid the elephant in the room any longer. At this point in time, there remains an abundance of bugs that range from mild to absolutely game-breaking. Even worse, there seems to be little consistency as to when they will appear and how greatly they will impact gameplay.

While I do not intend to defend any decisions to release the game in its state, as I do truly believe there is no way the developer was not aware of these bugs and yet chose to release it in this state regardless. Equally, I believe that these bugs will be remedied as soon as possible, as the returns and lost purchases must be painful for a game that received such immense attention prior to launch. The situation may be dire, but at its core Cyberpunk 2077 has enough merit that it may survive this rough take-off.

Cyberpunk 2077: In Conclusion

At the end of the day, Cyberpunk 2077 is a superb game marred by bugs and the curse of over-hyped marketing. As the former get repaired and the latter passes further into the rearview mirror, many people will come to realize that there is a wonderful game here waiting to take you away to a truly open-world environment with lots of replayability.

That being said, Stadia would definitely be my preferred platform for this title. As I personally will not be looking for a next-gen console for a while, Stadia allows me to play upcoming AAA titles without investing extra money into my gaming PC or suffering poor performance on previous-gen consoles. For anyway trying to decide on this game, I would simply wait for a few of the biggest bugs to be sorted out, at which point it is definitely going to be worth your time and money.
