The Darkside Detective Stadia
Detective Francis McQueen is the lead investigator in the Darkside division Twin Lakes City. Along with his funny sidekick, Officer Dooley, he gets ready to take on crime. Darkside Detective features nine unique cases to complete all with a different feel to them. The game features hours of fun with puzzles to solve so get that brain ready to work. Thanks to Google Stadia, I was able to complete this game on the go even without a controller, due to the point and click system which made things easier to play. The game had amazing writing with tons of funny jokes. My favourite character is Officer Dooley who adds comedy at the right times.
Darkside detective has a nice pixel look to it which suits the game. On top of that, the text is placed beautifully and is easy to read. I feel the price point for this game is bang on as it has hours of entertainment for under $20 CAD. Another key point that will make you want to play this game is that the sound was correspondingly great. It adds suspense at the right times, notably at the most tense moments. The objective is to solve super natural cases by speaking with people, collecting clues, and making important connections.
Even though the concept of point and click is simple, this game is challenging. Some cases have various puzzles to solve, meaning sometimes you even have to combine clues which will produce an entirely different item. On some levels, I really had to think – as a matter of fact I was stumped – more than a few times trying to figure out what was next. As you complete more cases, it’s easy to fall in love with Detective Francis McQueen and Officer Dooley. They truly compliment each other which makes it more enjoyable. McQueen is a smart Detective and, well, Dooley is just clueless. He does say the best lines in the game, however.
This is a spoiler free review so I won’t give away any case details. It’s nice to see the great care that went into Darkside Detective as it is truly unique. After completing all the cases at the end when, it said “to be continued,” I was excited to see what was next for the two Officers. The second season, A Fumble in the Dark, just released on Stadia on sale for $16.19 Canadian. This is a must pick up now, as the sale ends on April 27th. If you’re not a fan of point and click games, not to worry. You will probably still love this game, the story is that good. It’s phenomenal that such a simple concept is so entertaining.
Overall Darkside Detective is a must play for any type of gamer. The more I use Stadia, it’s easy to see cloud gaming is the future. I love the ability to pick up and play from anywhere. In my house, almost every television has a Chromecast I can jump from TV to TV without missing a beat. Thank you Akupara Games and Spooky Doorway for making this gem. Stay tuned for my review of Season 2. I hope it’s just as good.
