If you like old school NES/SNES Japanese rpgs (jrpgs) and “dice throwing” rpgs than we may have a game for you. Here’s our review of Sugoro Quest: Dice Heroes for the Nintendo Switch.

Sugoro Quest: Dice Heroes is a jrpg that’s come to the West for the first time. The story is random for each playthrough but it always starts off with a visit to the King and then choosing which hero: a fighter, dwarf, elf, etc that you want to go on a quest with. The stories are not that good but honestly, early jrpgs weren’t really known for great storylines. The gameplay, however, is something that old school jrpg fans may enjoy.

In Sugoro Quest, you travel along a set route like a board game. You’ll “throw dice” in order to determine how far you can move with each turn and how well your battles go. A lot of this game comes down to luck.

The battles, aside from the dice throwing, play a lot like early Final Fantasy and look like that too. If you are having a hard time with the game, you can go to the Cheats and turn on various options like high HP, MP, and more to make the game a lot easier. Maybe too easy. Though if want to see a lot of the game, it might be the only option for you.

Sugoro Quest also has Save states, meaning you can save anywhere and that is perfect for the Switch. You can play as long as you want, save and come back to it later.

Its likely that Sugoro Quest will only appeal to fans of NES/SNES jrpgs. Its possible that current jrpg fans might like this game but old school fans should get more enjoyment from playing a jrpg that never made it to the West back in the day. Sugoro Quest is a ground-breaking game or anything but it’s a fun, old school jrpg and it looks nice too.

Sugoro Quest: Dice Heroes has the classical 16-bit style look of an SNES game. It’s a good looking game, with well designed heroes and enemies. If you enjoy old school rpgs, then you’ll enjoy this game.

If you enjoy NES/SNES rpgs and dice throwing rpgs, then Sugoro Quest: Dice Heroes will be something you’ll want to check out. You’ve seen games like this before but the nostalgic gameplay and the cheap price of the game will be something that old school jrpgs fans may find irresistible.

Thanks to Ratalaika Games for providing a digital code for this review. Sugoro Quest comes out for the Nintendo Switch eshop on February 7th, 2025.
