Colorado Components Overview and Impressions

Games about the wild west fascinate me more than anything else – well, perhaps with the exception of animal games – and when Asmodee Canada offered us the opportunity to review Colorado, I jumped at that chance. Colorado is a, kinda, flip and write experience where you are marking things off on your player board and the central board in an attempt to earn as many points as possible.

As this is a writing game, all of the included boards are laminated to facilitate the use of dry erase markers. From the few games we have played so far, these boards are easy to write on, and wipe off just as easily when you are finished with little to no markings left behind. I cannot say right now how long these will hold up after weeks or months of use, but from our half dozen plays, I’d still list this game as “Like New” if I were to sell it.

Spoiler, I like it a lot, so this is not a game I plan to sell.

There is more to this game than just a bunch of markers and dry erase boards, however. I found the card quality to be better than I expected for a game in this price range, and while I would perhaps consider sleeving these cards as I think this game will get a lot of play in my household, if this will be a more casual adventure for you – perhaps a few times a year – I think you easily get away with not bothering with sleeves. Shoot, I’m pretty sure I don’t need them either, but when I plan to play a game a few times per month – so 20-30 times per year – I tend to opt for sleeves even when the card quality is pretty solid.

I also love the little golden nugget pieces this game comes with. They are just small bits of gold colored plastic, but they give the game a very nice tactile feel. Yes, they could have used cardboard chits for this instead of little golden pieces, but I think it just slightly adds to the appeal of the game.

Despite the player board and central board being pretty busy – not uncommon in roll / flip and writes – I think the look of the game is very nice. It gives that western vibe you expect when looking at the cover. The cards really do take this theming to the next level, with great artwork and clear symbology.

Overall, the production of Colorado is better than what I expected for a game in this price range. IF you plan to get a lot of plays in, it’s probably worth your time!
