This year the Overwatch League signed seven new teams and pro players earn a minimum of $50,000, plus health benefits, retirement savings plan, and housing and training facilities during the season. Better still, they get a share of bonuses and organizer Blizzard Entertainment is paying out $3.5 million a year here. With six to 12 players per team, there is plenty to go round, but competition for places is fierce. There are more than 30 million Overwatch players out there and all are considered free agents, so how do you become an Overwatch event pro?

Well, the old adage “practice makes perfect” has never been more applicable. If you want to become an Overwatch pro, you are going to have to start grinding. Be warned: the player signing window for pro Overwatch teams slams shut on October 31, 2017. But players that make it onto the rosters for teams sign one-year guaranteed contracts with the option to extend the contract for an additional year, which is not that long, so there will be plenty of opportunities to break into these teams going forwards. But you are going to have to display sheer dedication to the cause if you want to stand a chance.

The very best players have a disciplined, regimented practice schedule and they never waver from it. It is just like training for the Olympics or trying to make it as one of the world’s leading musicians: you have to constantly hammer away at it. But you also have to push yourself. Make sure you play against competitors that are better than you, as that is the only way you will improve. You should also become a real student of the game, analysing why the very best players are excelling. What tactics do they apply and how can you replicate that or improve upon it? Try to stay motivated. Thinking about your potential winnings helps. As example you might look at carrier of Félix Lengyel also known as “xQc” which might give you indication what is possible to achieve if you put yourself onto something you really good at.

Overwatch can be extremely lucrative: a $1 million bonus will go to the winning team in the first season. Leading sports team owners are all interested in the burgeoning industry and sportsbooks are also tapping into it, so the sky is the limit in terms of growth potential. Bovada will offer odds for the events, review them before you place some action and you can make serious money by betting on pro Overwatch events, enough to allow you to dedicate yourself to training for a while. If you are a true student of it, you will be at an advantage and can beat the books here.

It pays to join plenty of online Overwatch communities to share best practice and learn that it is all about being a team player. Make sure you have cutting edge technology as sub-standard gear will only hamper your performance. You cannot hope to be a professional unless you take it seriously and invest in hardware with the right performance to suit your ambitions. Find or join teams, enter tournaments and pit your wits against as many fellow hopefuls as possible.

If you want to become an Overwatch pro, you have to live and breathe the game. It sounds like the job from heaven and it could be great, but that also makes it extremely competitive, so you have to fight to stand out in a crowd. But you also have to be patient: don’t give up if it doesn’t happen for you immediately. A lot of the very best players have been playing competitively for a number of years and you cannot hope to emulate that success overnight. As long as you keep enjoying it and it does not become a chore, you will stay motivated and could well make it.
