Dragon Quest 1 and 2

Dragon Quest 1 and 2 are pretty similar to each other. I mentioned this in my preview of the games. So I decided to review these two games together. What are the games like? Which is better? Are they both worth a download? Check out my review of Dragon Quest 1 and 2 for Nintendo Switch!

The following review covers both Dragon Quest 1 and 2. Both games are pretty similar, so I will try to cover the seminaries  and also the differences between the two.

Dragon Quest 1

This is where the Dragon Quest franchise started. Originally  this game was called Dragon Warrior in the United States. The version on the Switch is called Dragon Quest and its graphics have been updated.

Dragon Quest 1  on Switch doesn’t look as good as Dragon Quest 11 S’s 2D mode. Its pretty obvious that Dragon Quest 1 is the port of a mobile game. Its graphics won’t appeal to everyone. Personally, I thought its graphics were fine and much better than the original games.

Gameplay wise, Dragon Quest 1 is beyond simplistic. The story is barely there, theres not much to the battle system (its classic first person and pretty barebones), and its very easy to get lost in this game. Dragon Quest 1 does have good controls though.

I wouldn’t say Dragon Quest 1 is a horrible game but its really a game that will only appeal to retro jrpg fans.

Dragon Quest 2

The second Dragon Quest game is a bit better than the first. I would say that this is a good game. Its story still isn’t great but it does give you more direction than the first game. Its battle system is also improved a little. The controls, which are good in the first, are good in this one too.

Graphics wise, Dragon Quest 2 looks a lot like the first. The biggest improvement is the look of the battle system. The enemy artwork here is more pleasing.

I still think that retro jrpg fans will have the most fun with Dragon Quest 2 but if a newbie wanted to try one of the two, I’d recommend the second game.

Overall, I am glad that Dragon Quest 1 and 2 are on the Nintendo Switch. I’m a huge fan of the series! As far as I’m concerned, the more Dragon Quest on Switch, the better.

That said, these updates were really made and brought to Switch for long time Dragon Quest fans. Still, if you are a new fan and you want to check the first games out on Switch, here they are!

Dragon Quest 1 gets a 6.5 out of 10.

Dragon Quest 2 gets a 7.0 out of 10

Thank you to Square Enix for providing digital copies of these games. Both Dragon Quest 1 and 2 are now available on the Nintendo Switch eshop.
