More Thoughts From Me #181: Skeptical of Fire Emblem Three Houses

I haven’t always been a Fire Emblem fan. I’ve tried the series in the past, Path of Radiance on the Gamecube for instance, and didn’t care for it. I couldn’t get into Fire Emblem Awakening on the 3DS. But I loved Fire Emblem Fates and Fire Emblem Shadows of Valentia. And so I thought at first I’d be excited for the Switch game. The more I’ve seen of the game though, the less sure I am that its my sort of game. Why the hesitation over Three Houses? I’ll try to explain.

When I first saw Fire Emblem Three Houses, I thought the battle system looked very cool and I absolutely wanted the game for Nintendo Switch.

As I started to see more of the game though, I liked the look of it less.

It was absolutely the school concept that was making me less interested in the game. I’d much rather be taking part in Fire Emblem battles than wasting time running around some school, trying to be friends with allies, teaching classes, etc. Fire Emblem: Three Houses looks like more of a rpg like Persona and less like a regular Fire Emblem game. I do like that. I am an rpg fan but to me, Fire Emblem should just be a strategy rpg focused more on its battles than its story.

Yes, the battle system still looks great. I just don’t like the look of everything leading up to the battle system.

Though I admit the addition of fishing mini-game has my attention…

Even so, Fire Emblem Three Houses looks less like a Fire Emblem game than usual. I hear that Koei Tecmo was the lead on this game. It seems like Intelligent Systems wasn’t that invovled in the creation of Three Houses and it shows.

With everyone talking about the game, I have been tempted to buy Three Houses but than I keep coming back around to the school. Will that actually be fun? I’m still unsure about that. I’m not sure I want to spend actual money on the game. I have been entering contests to win the game but I don’t think I’m likely to win. So I may just pass on Fire Emblem: Three Houses…

Besides, Dragon Quest 11 S is coming out next month! That game is much more my speed.

But am I wrong about Fire Emblem: Three Houses? I keep getting this nagging feeling that if only I’d play the game, I would find out how addictive and cool it is. I just can’t afford to roll the dice right now on a game I’m unsure about. Maybe sometime in the future? I’m not going to hold my breath for a price drop because Nintendo rarely ever drops the price on Fire Emblem games…

Who knows though. Maybe Fire Emblem: Three Houses will eventually be one of the games that Nintendo will let gamers try out for free via Nintendo Switch online. I can only hope!

What do you think of Fire Emblem: Three Houses? Am I wrong to hesitate? Should I be playing Three Houses right now? Let me know in the comments!

Next Week: I’m going to download and try out DC Universe Online for the Nintendo Switch. Is this MMO any good on the Switch? Do I like it? I’ll let you know if I’ve become addicted to DC Universe Online in next weeks More Thoughts!

More Thoughts From Me is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed here are mine and mine alone. I’m probably wrong about Fire Emblem: Three Houses and its an awesome game.
