World of Warcraft(R): Wrath of the Lich King(R) – A Pandemic System Game Launching This Fall

There isn’t a major franchise that board game companies won’t exploit for a solid payday, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Over the past few years, we’ve played a few fantastic TV / Movie / Video Game inspired board games, our favourite being Game of Thrones Catan! While never a big World of Warcraft player, a board game in that universe is something I can get behind, and Z-Man games is set to deliver on that this fall!

There is this constant battle between covering a game that so many people love, while potentially giving press to a company rife with problems that start at the top and is prevalent throughout. To that end, this article is only referencing the board game side of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King – A Pandemic System Game produced and published by Z-Man Games.

Here is just a bit from the recent press release sent out by Z-Man:

Wrath of the Lich King is our first time taking the Pandemic game system into beloved fictional settings like Azeroth. It literally opens up a whole new world of possibility,” says Justin Kemppainen, Director of Brand Management at Z-Man Games. “There’s no greater threat to Azeroth than the Scourge. The game really illustrates that by mixing the thrilling cooperative gameplay Pandemic fans know and love with World of Warcraft. We’re confident new and existing players of both franchises will love it!

The board game will include:

• The Pandemic system with familiar mechanics and gameplay, now tweaked to embrace the World of Warcraft universe.
• An extra-large game board featuring forts, temples, battlegrounds and iconic locations native to Azeroth.
• Legendary World of Warcraft characters with detailed and sculpted plastic figures, including Thrall, the Warchief of the Horde; Varian Wrynn, King of Stormwind; and Sylvanas Windrunner, Banshee Queen of the Forsaken.
• Quests, a brand-new mechanic to Pandemic that sees players adventuring across Northrend to battle monstrous entities, destroy evil relics, and more.
• Hero Cards that give players an edge against their enemies in the form of equipment for more attack power during combat, special mounts that allow players to move more spaces on their turn, healing potions to restore hit points, and much more.

The game will retail for a MSRP of 89.99 CAD, and will be available this fall. Your favourite local board game shop should be able to secure you a copy for release, so be sure to call today!
