blank

At number 10, we have Nintendo’s Wii Sports Resort which was released in 2009 and sold a whopping 33 million copies worldwide. The platform this game was played on was the extremely successful Nintendo Wii which allowed players to get up from their chairs and use their bodies and arms to play the game. The Nintendo Wii was innovative for its time and people enjoyed the combination of exercise with video games in their homes. Nowadays, games are played more often on computers, a popular one at the moment is the Flaming Fox Game.

Mario Kart Wii

Mario Kart Wii by Nintendo takes the number 9 spot. It was released in 2008 and sold 37 million copies worldwide. This is another game created by Nintendo and played on the Nintendo Wii. Mario was already a hugely popular game franchise so it is no surprise that this game was a huge success. Using the Wii controller allowed players to feel as if they were actually driving and could race against friends to see who was the best. With a huge range of fun and interactive courses to play, the fun was endless with this game.

Wii Fit

The Wii Fit was revolutionary in combining fitness with technology and could be done at home. It was released in 2007 and sold an eye-watering 44 million copies worldwide. This game was created by Nintendo and required a balance board, also sold by Nintendo, to use all of the features of the game. Players could learn yoga, play fun mini-games, and practice balance all whilst in the comfort of their homes so it is no surprise that this game was a huge hit.

Pokemon Red/Blue

At the number 7 spot, we have Pokemon Red/Blue, created by Game Freak and released in 1996. This game, unlike the ones before, was played on the Gameboy, a handheld console created by Nintendo. This game sold a breathtaking 49 million copies worldwide and was playable on a number of different Nintendo consoles. This game can be categorized as a platform game where you play as Mario traversing obstacles and jumping over enemies to complete the different levels.

PlayerUnknown’s Battleground

We are now in the top 5 best-selling video games of all time. To kick this list off, we have PlayerUnknown’s Battleground created by PUBG and sold 50 million copies worldwide. This game was released in 2017 and marked the beginning of the rise in popularity of the battle royal genre. Players would drop into a map and have to find weapons and supplies to fight other players until there was only one left. Out of 100 players, there could be only one winner so it is easy to see how people became enthralled in this type of game, eager to be crowned the last man alive. It is available on several platforms which is another reason that it was able to sell so many copies.

Wii Sports

At number 4 on this list, we have Wii Sports by Nintendo. This game was released in 2006 and sold a whopping 83 million copies around the world. It was only playable on the Nintendo Wii which included a sensor that could sense 3-dimensional movements. This was extremely innovative for its time and allowed players to feel as if they were actually on the tennis court playing an opponent from inside their own homes. This game has a tonne of different sports to try out so it’s no surprise that it was hugely popular.

Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V takes number 3 on the list of best-selling video games of all time. With over 115 million copies sold worldwide, it has earned the special title of being one of three games to ever sell more than 100 million copies. The game was designed and created by the American video game company, Rockstar and was released back in 2013. It is played across several platforms and allows you to play in an open world where can do you whatever you like. It has a story game mode that has had a lot of success as well.

Tetris

blank

Some people might forget about this one but Tetris is actually the second best-selling video game of all time. Released back in 1984, Tetris was created by Alexey Pajitnov who sold over 170 million copies around the world. For a somewhat simple puzzle game, this is truly an amazing feat. Nowadays, the Tetris company holds the license for the game and is based in Hawaii. Pajitnov co-owns this company.

Minecraft

Taking the number 1 spot, just about everyone has probably heard of this game, it’s Minecraft. Markus Persson, or what he is more commonly known as Notch, created the game back in 2009 and probably didn’t predict the success of his game. Released in 2011, Minecraft sold over 180 copies worldwide making it the best-selling video game of all time. It can be described as a sandbox survival game where you can farm resources and build your own world from the ground up.

The development of the game was done by Mojang, a small Swedish company until it was sold to Microsoft in 2014 for $2.5 billion. The most interesting part about Minecraft is that there isn’t really any end goal. You just spend your time building your world in either survival mode or multiplayer mode with friends. This way you can’t actually complete the game, perhaps this is why it became so popular.
