Opinionated Logan: Kirby Planet Robobot

There has been one title on the 3DS that my son Logan has played religiously since it came out. He has played it in car rides to Florida, flights, at Disney World while waiting for rides, and on cruises when falling asleep. This particular game has traveled more miles with us than anything else. That title would be Kirby Triple Deluxe. He has beaten the title numerous times, played through all the mini games, and for whatever reason, things never seem to get old. When Kirby Planet Robobot came in the mail from Nintendo a few weeks back it was a constant “can I play it?” coming out of his mouth; even on school nights, when he knows he’s not allowed to play video games, he was begging to play Kirby. That is how much he loves it.

If Nintendo released a Kirby game annually, Logan would never stop playing with that loveable pink ball. He uses words like “fantastic” and “so much fun” over and over again as he moves from one stage to the next. What I find is the greatest achievement Nintendo has managed with this game is it’s accessibility. Although Logan will rarely get every single collectible in a level – and frankly, I don’t even think the thought crosses his mind – he can still make it through each and every stage, including boss fights. The argument could be made by some, then, that Kirby Planet Robobot is too easy. I disagree. While I make it through stages much faster than Logan, getting all the collectibles and 100%’ing the level takes a lot more work and effort, making the game ‘harder’ for an older audience. It’s still not hard, but it’s enjoyably difficult.

Logan is still playing this title, and it’s one of those games that he will risk getting in trouble to sneak a 2DS and a copy of the game into his bed at night – yes, he has done this. Yes, he got in trouble. No Kirby for a week has been a devastating punishment, but that speaks to the reach this title has with children. If you have a child who loves Kirby or simple platforming games, Planet Robobot is something to invest in.

Oh yah! The first things I heard Logan yell was, “THIS GAME HAS ROBOTS!” He likes it, and so will you!
