Firegirl: Hack ‘n Splash Rescue DX stars a firefighter, aka firegirl, whose mission is to put out as many fires and rescue as many people as possible. These are no ordinary fires though. The fires seem to be alive and there are even firebats and other fire things too. There is an interesting and mysterious story in Firegirl but most of the focus is on the gameplay.

The main character is armed with a firehose, and she can use it to put out fires and shoot water down in order to lift her to higher areas. The areas that Firegirl goes into are randomly generated and the layout may seem similar but is never the same. Its really neat going into each mission and seeing how far you can get before either getting “dying” or finding the exit.

In between missions you’ll go back to your firehouse homebase. As the game progresses, you’ll upgrade the firehouse and your firefighting abilities. The more people you save in missions, the more people that will volunteer to work at the firehouse and the more things that’ll open in the game. The firefighting and firehouse upgrading is addictive. Firegirl’s gameplay is so good. The game controls well and it is a ton of fun. Firegirl has excellent graphics too.

Firegirl has a similar HD-2D style to Square Enix’s games expect Firegirl is stuck in 2D mode. Its not simple left to right though. When you walk into an area, you’ll be walking left to right, but then by using your firehose you can go up or down. Some rooms that you can’t enter will appear in the background, along with other unique backgrounds that give the game a three-dimensional look. However, there is some framerate stutter on occasion, especially when you first go into a fire fighting mission! Otherwise, the game looks and plays well.

Firegirl: Hack ‘n Splash Rescue DX is a great game overall. The gameplay cycle could have easily felt repetitive, but the game manages to add more and more upgrades and surprises that keep things interesting. If you’re looking for a fun game, you should check out Firegirl. It is another excellent addition to the Switch’s library.

Firegirl: Hack ‘n Splash Rescue DX gets a 9.0 out of 10
