Alchemic Jousts

The tower defense genre can be a mixed bag at times. I’ve played some tower defense games that were really good, others that had potential but were a bit too complex, and still others that were too simple. Alchemic Jousts for the Nintendo Switch is a tower defense game that looks good, but is it?

There is no story or setup for Alchemic Jousts. Instead, the player is a given tutorial pop-up boxes that help teach you how to play the game. These boxes are helpful and it shouldn’t take anyone too long to get the hang of this game. However, there really isn’t much to get the hang of…

Alchemic Jousts is a tower defense game thats too simple. There is a neat way to create new “characters” to send out against the other tower, but other than that, there isn’t much to this game. There are different modes but all of them play very similar to each other.

Most of the gameplay in Alchemic Jousts is about destroying the other tower before they destroy yours. This game can get pretty boring.

There is a two-player mode. I didn’t get to try that out for this review. I’m not sure if it would’ve been more fun then the single player mode though.

That said, the controls on Alchemic Jousts are easy to learn and work well. There is no touch screen controls for this however and that seems like a major missed opportunity. Alchemic seems like it would be the perfect game for touch screen controls.

As for the game’s graphics, they are pretty good. I do wish there was more variety in the characters and especially in the maps though.

I wouldn’t say that Alchemic Jousts is a horrible game. There is some fun to be had here, but I wouldn’t say that its anywhere near the best tower defense game on the Nintendo Switch.

If you are a big fan of this genre, you may want to check this out or you may just want to wait and see if theres a demo. Anyone who isn’t big fan of the tower defense genre should probably avoid this game.

Alchemic Jousts gets a 5.0 out of 10.

A digital code was provided for this review. Alchemic Jousts is currently available on the Nintendo Switch eshop!
