Disney Infinity 1.0 Free on eShop

A few weeks ago, Activision announced that the Wii version of Skylanders Trap Team would have a free download code so that the game could also be played on Wii U. Disney has decided to do something similar, although they are focusing on a game already out, rather than their upcoming release.

Over the weekend, Disney Infinity 1.0 popped up on the Wii U eShop in North America as a free download. Although the portal and characters are still required to play the game, this is a very smart move by Disney, and potentially Nintendo as well if this deal is exclusive to their console. As of the time of writing, no free download seems to be available on any other system.

People that may have purchased Disney Infinity 1.0 on the Wii, Xbox 360, or PS3 can now use their portal and characters on the Wii U. All they need to do is download the free game, plug in their portal, and begin playing.

Hopefully, a similar incentive will be available on the Xbox One and PS4. If this is not the case, Nintendo can chalk this up as one awesome, albeit minor, advantage their system has over the others, especially when it comes to kid friendly, family oriented titles.

Two version of Disney Infinity 2.0 are set to release in Fall/Winter 2014.

Authors Note: After doing a round of tests and a bit of research online, the Xbox 360 portal will NOT work on Wii U. The portal model number is the same for Wii, Wii U and PS3, but different for Xbox 360. I’m told this is because Microsoft has made their USB ports only compatible with Microsoft and approved devices.
