LEGO Dimensions – Mission Impossible Level Pack

I always enjoy when LEGO Dimensions comes out with Level packs. Although we have seen that they aren’t quite as big as Story Packs, they definitely beat out Team Packs and Fun Packs in overall value. The Mission Impossible Level Pack may seem small – only one character and two vehicles – but the included levels and story line make this one exceptional release for the popular franchise.

The Builds

In general, I would say I enjoy the majority of the LEGO Dimensions builds, whether it be for the unique LEGO pieces you might find in each, or the actual look of the set itself – see our Harry Potter Team Pack review for evidence of that! I wasn’t as excited for the Mission Impossible sets, but that might be because my enthusiasm for the franchise is pretty minimal. The two included vehicles are OK in my opinion, but not as striking or iconic as the Hogwarts Express or the Simpsons car. They are still quality builds, and my sons seem to really enjoy them, both within the game and as stand alone toys.

One of the bonuses to this set is that the motorcycle included with this set is one of the few motorcycles in the whole game – I believe there is one with the Ninjago sets – and this is great because roaming around on the bike is a lot more fun than a standard four wheel car.

The Ethan Hunt minifigure is outstanding, and aside from bring a few unique bricks to your LEGO collection – most notably the black torso piece – he also brings a ton of new features to the game which we will explore next.

Gameplay

The very first thing that struck me about this Level pack was the incredible lighting affects when you first scale the outside of a large mansion to begin your mission. The way the light bounces of the LEGO bricks from the windows is outstanding. If this has been standard with all Dimensions sets to date, then I have missed it. The environmental affects in the Mission Impossible levels is wonderful and eye catching, so kudos to the developers for creating something so pretty.

As I said before, the Ethan Hunt figure brings a ton of new things to LEGO Dimensions, but I really want to focus on the two biggest ones. The first is a wonderful little helicopter drone that Hunt can use to fly into tight spaces and flip switches. This will be great when integrated into future packs, and hopefully they release another character or two that will also have a drone to play with.

The second new feature is much bigger than the first, and that is the ability to scan the room for an enemy, adopt his disguise, and make it through various body scanning checkpoints. These are used through out the Mission Impossible level, and will make a great addition to future LEGO Dimensions story packs and play sets. There is so much potential with this new move, but again, I hope LEGO and Warner Bros. do not limit this ability to this one set.

Conclusion

This set is a MUST BUY because of how versatile the Ethan Hunt character is. He can climb walls and swing around levels like Wild Styles, he can perform Ninja Acrobatics – previously limited to the Ninjago line up of figures and sets – and so much more. When you add the outstanding visuals to the great movie sound clips and voice overs, you (once again, to avoid beating a dead horse…) have a PHENOMENAL LEGO Dimensions set that is a must own for anyone working their way through the game. The Ethan Hunt figure alone is worth the price of entry.
