GTAV is the most expensive game ever made

A Scottish newspaper called The Scotsman ran a story earlier today highlighting the insane budget for the soon to be released Grand Theft Auto V by Rockstar.

GTAV-2

The game, which has been in development for the past five years, has ran up a marketing and development budget of a staggering £170 million ($265 million), making it the most expensive video game ever made. On a wider scope, if we were to place the game amongst movie releases, GTAV is second only to Pirates Of The Caribbean: At Worlds End which had a budget of $300 million. While Tangled and Spiderman 3 hover around the $260 million mark.

So how does it compare to other costly video games? According to Wikipedia, the current record holder amongst video games is Star Wars: The Old Republic which was released to PC back in 2011 with a budget of $200 million. Surprisingly, Rockstar’s very own GTAIV had a budget of just $100 million.

With GTAV costing more than twice as much to develop than IV, it’s safe to say it’s going to be spectacular. With 2.5 million preorders in the US alone, analysts are already predicting the game to be the biggest selling game of all time. GTAIV has sold over 25 million copies worldwide so far.

GTAV releases to PS3 and Xbox 360 in just nine days! September 17th.
