#GamerGate Supporters Begin Emailing Publisher PR

GamerGate

#GamerGate is still going strong, with thousands of people adding their two cents to the discussion on Twitter and beyond. In some places, like The Escapist and the wider Defy Media network, this is having a great effect, and associates of those bloggers interested in insulting the gaming community are starting to find their allies falling by the wayside. So far, the hashtag supporters have approached ad providers and other readers, but now they’re looking at things from the other direction: they’re contacting the PR people who represent the biggest companies in the industry.

Urged to be courteous and polite, a list of industry email addresses were posted to 4chan and quickly spread to other sites. By contacting people in the industry, by showing why they’re upset with the current state of games journalism, they’re hoping to somehow involve the AAA side of gaming in a complete overhaul of our current practises. While this idea isn’t immediately threatening to the bigger sides, it could very easily change the narrative being shared by the average person. PR people are still desperate to get news of their latest game on Kotaku – they get a bajillion hits every month and have a keen following of people interested in a variety of titles – but if just one of them issues a statement in which they don’t dare to call their userbase a collection of disgusting misogynists, that might wake up a few outliers to the conversation being had.

While we’re not going to post the image itself as a professional courtesy to busy people not directly involved with the controversy, it’s fairly easy to find with Google, on Twitter or Reddit.
