More Thoughts From Me Special Edition: I Have A Switch!

I thought I wasn’t going to get a Nintendo Switch till Christmas. And then, one day recently, I found out we were able to get a Nintendo Switch! We called up Gamestop and found out that they had two systems left. We went over there, picked up the system, a 64 GB micro SD card, and two games! I came home and…well, let me tell you about it in the rest of my column ok? Welcome to a More Thoughts From Me Special Edition! Its time to Switch!

I have a Nintendo Switch.

I thought it would be a little bit before I’d be able to write those words. I’ve been wanting the system since it was first announced. I wasn’t able to buy it on day one though. It didn’t seem like I’d be able to get one till Christmas!

And then on Wednesday, I found out it was possible to get a Switch earlier than I thought. It was a total surprise!

Of course, my first worry was whether or not we’d actually find a Nintendo Switch. They have been in short supply recently. We called up Gamestop first and they had two systems left! We asked them to hold one for us and a micro SD card too.

When we got to the store, the checkout guy went into the back and got the system. A minor disappointment was that the system didn’t have the nice color joy-cons. Oh well! I wanted the system and I wasn’t about to not take this one and go look somewhere else. A Nintendo fan should just feel lucky to find the system at all right now.

I knew which games I wanted but I did take a second to look the games available over and make sure I got what I wanted. I decided to buy Disgaea 5 Complete and Puyo Puyo Tetris. I am a big jrpg/strategy fan and puzzle fan so I figured these were the two to get.

We also picked up a 64 GB micro SD card.

When we started unpacking the system at home, I was in for a shock. I hadn’t realized just how small the system was. All the pictures of the Switch make it look bigger. The same could be said for the joy-cons and the system dock. My jaw was on the floor. And I was really impressed by how fantastic the screen looked.

After the system was hooked up and I went through the setup, we were greeted by the system’s very barebones main menu. I turned the menu to black right away. I am hoping that Nintendo adds themes to the Switch sooner or later or at least more colors! Though, I admit, I am starting to get use to have nice and easy to use the main menu of the Switch is.

As for the games I bought, Disgaea 5 and Puyo Puyo are both really good. I also downloaded the Rayman Legends demo. It is awesome. I can see myself spending hours with my two games. Though, I have to admit, I wish the joy-cons had a regular D-Pad. The analog stick is just not precise enough for Disgaea or Puyo Puyo. I am starting to get use to the D-Pad like buttons on the left joy-con but I’m still wishing for a regular D-pad. I’ll need to get a Pro controller soon.

That said, the joy-cons are pretty comfortable in my hands. I love the little dock thing that mimics a regular controller. This is perfect for when playing games via the TV. I think my favorite way to play the Switch is via the system’s own screen. Yes the games look even better on the TV but the Switch is so much fun in portable mode. It feels nice in my hands.

My favorite feature of the Switch so far is the screenshot capture button. I love being able to take a picture of any game I’m playing! Its also great to get a pic of the main menu.

My least favorite aspect of the Switch so far is that it has no apps. There is no Netflix or Hulu. I’d love to be able to watch them on my Nintendo Switch! Also: the system seriously need an internet browser!

Overall, I’m very happy with my Nintendo Switch. I think its a great system and I suspect it’ll get even better with each system update and new game Nintendo (and others) release!

Oh and by the way, I wasn’t happy with just two games! I’ve already bought a third game via the Switch’s easy to use (and great looking) eshop. I got I Am Setsuna. Its a really good jrpg for the Nintendo Switch. I hope to have a review of it up sooner or later on this site. But it looks like it might be a big game, so the review might be awhile!

I can’t wait to get back to my Nintendo Switch. In fact, I think I’ll go do that now. See ya next week!

More Thoughts From Me is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed here are mine and mine alone. Time for Nintendo Switch!
