LoveFilm Stopping All Game Rentals August 8th

Lovefilm_logo_690x431

Lovefilm have confirmed that they will cease to provide game rentals in early August. New members can no longer sign up for a gaming account and from August 8th, current members will also find that they can no longer rent games.

This whole thing has seemingly come out of nowhere, with what has always seemed a fairly successful service being stopped with only a month’s notice.

In order to give the best possible service that we can, we are looking to focus on our strength, which is providing the best selection of film and TV content for our customers, and making it available whenever and wherever you want it.

This is linked with a new focus on streaming content, an attempt by Amazon, I suppose, of beating out the Netflix crowd.

This will come as a disappointment to many who have used the service for years. It was a great way of getting brand new games without the cost, although the way the service worked meant that it was often a lucky dip.

It’ll be interesting to see how this affects their subscriber numbers. The big plus for Lovefilm is its physical rental service, and I can’t imagine anybody would spend that much a month to have disks sent through the posts any more. Instead, they’d utilize iTunes and Netflix, perhaps paying a little more but having instant content and a degree of ownership (or the ability to return back to a title, anyway).

Cancellation is easy, for those that want to go that way. Simply call 0800 091 1514, tell them that you want to cancel, listen to a few attempts at them offering you deals, send back any disks you might have.

If you’re interested in continuing to rent games, read our handy list.
