Lovefilm Apologises After “Third Party” Games Announcement, Month of Free Games

Lovefilm

Lovefilm have today released an email to subscribers explaining their changing gaming services, and also apologising for not releasing the news themselves.

You may have already heard reports about changes to Games rental as part of the LOVEFiLM service.

We’re very sorry if any information about service changes reached you by third party or media reports, rather than first coming from us.

They also confirm that they’re dropping the game portion of their packages to focus “on our core strength of providing world-class film and TV subscription services.” Although subscribers will be able to continue renting games until the 8th August, the email says that Lovefilm won’t be charging users for this final month, automatically downgrading them to the “2 DVDs & Blu-rays per month,” £4.89 package.

Your account will be automatically updated, so if you want to cancel, now is the time to do it. It’s not difficult, although you will have to call. You can’t cancel online.

There were first rumours that Amazon were dropping the game rental portion of their Lovefilm service last month, when an email to third party affiliates asked them to stop advertising the game rental service. It was confirmed later on that new members would not be able to rent games, although it was quite a bit after that they announced they’d be dropping the service altogether.

If you’re a current subscriber, enjoy your final month. If you’ve cancelled already (like me), take a look at some of the current Lovefilm alternatives
