Chip’s Challenge a Nice Release on Steam

Many months back we reviewed a game called Chuck’s Challenge, which was created and designed by the Chip’s Challenge creator Chuck Sommerville. Playing Chuck’s Challenge was great fun, and it brought back memories of playing Chip’s Challenge in the early 90s. The problem, however, was that it was not Chip’s Challenge.

This year, Chip’s Challenge and the previously unreleased Chip’s Challenge 2 hit Steam. When we recieved our review codes I immedietly began playing, and low and behold, it plays and feels just like it did in 1992. This is both a great things for someone looking for a nostalgic fix, but also a bad thing as it might not appeal to a broader audience. I wasn’t as worried about getting through the  original; afterall, I had beat that numerous times on my old computer in ’92. I really wanted to play the previously unreleased sequel, which was had been developed and finished in 1992 before being sold and not released.

Fortunetly, Sommerville reobtained the rights to the sequel, and now we have it on Steam in 1080P glor…nope, it’s not. It is actually just like the original. Again, this is a good thing for me, but not necessarily a good thing for new players. Releasing it as-is was probably the easiest avenue for Chuck, although I would have appreciated a new, high resolution look. At the least, Sommerville and his team could have done what the creators of Monkey Island did when they rereleased their titles. Giving players the option to swap between the original look and the new look broadens the appeal of the title.

Regardless, I love this game. It still feels like the game I played in the 90s and i have no problem with that. Jump on Steam and begin collecting all those chips. Don’t be fooled: while they may seem easy as they are all in plain site, getting them within the time frame can be tricky.
