Square Enix Announce Rise of the Tomb Raider

tombraider-1_690x325

Tomb Raider 2 was an inevitability. Rise of the Tomb Raider wasn’t. Apparently they listened to fans worried about the confusion of going back through the numbers. The important thing is that the survival adventure reboot is getting a sequel, and that it looks to focus just as much on Lara’s character as the original.

In fact, the whole trailer focused around the idea of character development. Lara looks older, more tired. She’s speaking with a therapist (who, as our very own Allison Hill noted, looks good enough to belong in a David Cage title). The events of the previous game obviously have sat heavily on her shoulders.

That’s not to say that there wasn’t the hint of some action. Lara will find herself again in the middle of a semi-supernatural adventure, in which she’ll need to use her wits to survive. The developers had previously said that they’re looking to make the next game in the franchise “more Skyrim,” to really take advantage of the open world thing in a way that will suit Tomb Raider. It’s too early to tell if we’re interested just yet – it’s only a teaser trailer after all – but Rise of the Tomb Raider looks set to be just as interested as you’d expect.
