David Attenborough Working on Oculus Rift Documentary

Sir-David-Attenborough

Respected documentarian and TV legend David Attenborough will be bringing a brand new documentary exclusively to Oculus Rift. The new film will be entitled Conquest of the Skies and will be shot in 360 degrees to allow for head movement. It’s one of the first VR documentaries to be made, and will likely be the first to grab proper mainstream attention.

Conquest of the Skies will also be shown on Sky 3D, although how exactly it’ll be available to those with Rift devices is uncertain. Most likely it’ll be available to purchase and download via PC, although in what manner and at what cost has yet to be revealed. The release of the non-VR version, outside of Sky 3D, hasn’t yet been clarified either, although you can bet it’ll end up on Blu-ray at some point in the future.

From an interview with the commercial director of Atlantic Productions, John Morris:

We’re now filming for the Oculus Rift, so when we filmed our recent flight in Borneo, we filmed with an eight-camera rig, so you got the full 360° experience.

In terms of the creative challenge, we look at this as being comparable to the beginning of the film industry.

He also mentioned that he could see millions of Oculus Rifts being sold in the future.
