Uncharted 3 multiplayer free-to-play ?

It’s no secret that Naughty Dog has something big lined up for the Uncharted 3 multiplayer mode this year. They announced at the end of 2012 that they were about to unveil something important, and most people guessed it would be something a little more than Doughnut Drake in a Sombrero (although, we’d buy that as well). Several sites theorized that the online portion of that title may be going free-to-play and Sony have added pretty concrete credence to that

A post on the US PlayStation Blog let slip that “Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception Multiplayer (free-to-play)” would be coming to the store very soon. Mention of the game was quickly removed, but not before hundreds of PlayStation fans had seen the unintentional reveal.

There was no extra information revealed, no hint at how (or if) they’re going to try to monetize the game, but now that it’s all out in the open, you can probably expect an official word from Sony or from Naughty Dog over the next few weeks (or maybe even sooner).

It was actually almost a year ago that Killzone 3’s multiplayer modes went free-to-play (it was actually February 28th, 2012), and with word that Sony will be supporting free-to-play ventures on PS4, this might just be another test of how best to profit from giving away an awesome online game for nothing. Either way, presuming there isn’t some draconian limit on how many games you can play, this is a fantastic bargain and one that I strongly suggest anyone unfamiliar with the Uncharted series try it out.
