Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Runs at 60FPS on PS4, 30FPS on One

A few weeks ago we ran a story saying that the new-gen version of Tomb Raider would run at only 30FPS. That has turned out to be only half true. On the Xbox One, 30FPS is about the limit. On PlayStation 4, you can expect anything up to 60FPS.

This must have been a quite recent development, or rather something that wasn’t 100% certain when the original story ran. Representatives of Square and of Crystal Dynamics were happy to defend 30FPS, and some fans even saw it as a design choice. With the difference between the two new-gen consoles being this huge, however, it becomes difficult to defend one over the other. It might not run at a smooth 60FPS on PlayStation, and that might be a problem, but at least it tries.

Square Enix commented on the issue earlier today:

Both platforms offer the same outstanding Tomb Raider experience. Delivering the core Tomb Raider gameplay at native 1080p and running at 30fps was always our primary goal given the type of experience Tomb Raider is and the exploration we want players to do. Anything beyond 30fps for this version is gravy.

Those buying the PlayStation version just got a huge heap of gravy, and a chocolate cake for afters as well.
