Tetris Dropping on PS4 and Xbox One

You’ve got your nice shiny next-gen console, you’ve got a HDTV and your state of the art smartphone for second screen play. There’s only one thing missing really, isn’t there? Tetris. Because as easy as it would be to joke about the classic game coming to the latest gaming machines, actually, there’s not a down side.

Ubisoft have announced a new deal with The Tetris Company and that they’ll be bringing a new game to new-gen consoles. 2014 marks the 30th anniversary of the title, so you can be sure they’ll really be pushing the boat out to not only make their mark on the franchise, but to celebrate everything that’s come before them as well. Maybe it’ll be an Assassin’s Creed mode or something?

From the press release, Yves Guillemot comments on Ubisoft’s position:

We’re very excited to start working with this world-renowned brand, and can’t wait to combine Ubisoft’s expertise and all the capacities of next-gen consoles to create an exciting new Tetris experience for fans.

There’s a lot of questions to be asked here, and no doubt Tetris fans are worrying about what might be. With new machines, each with a huge amount of power, Ubisoft could really push the boat out and do something completely amazing with all the bells and whistles that decent hardware can offer. But would it be Tetris?

On the other hand, they can just put out a basic package and be accused of adding nothing to it. Unfortunately, nothing official has be revealed as of yet, but it’s definitely one to watch. New publisher, new hardware… what could go wrong?

Ironically, Tetris won’t be making its way to the Wii U.
