Still no GameCube VC: Nintendo Saves the best for Remastered Editions

Nintendo is the worst. They are the best, obviously, but they are the worst. During the last Nintendo Direct, we were promised a new service coming to the Wii U: digital Wii games. That’s amazing right? While I would argue that it is, I cannot say it’s what I really wanted. However, Nintendo is – and should be since they are a company – looking out for themselves and their financial future, so while digital Wii games makes financial sense, having digital GameCube games makes more sense, at least for consumers.

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD was very popular for Nintendo. It birthed special edition consoles, premium strategy guides, and an exclusive figurine. It was a monster hit when taking the Wii U install base into consideration, and Nintendo saw the profits that come from it. So, instead of getting Super Mario Sunshine and Mario Golf: Toadstool’s Tour as digital offerings, Nintendo gave us digital Wii games instead. Nintendo is saving the best of the GameCube era to create remastered, disc editions. And who can blame them. For myself, Super Mario Sunshine HD is an instant buy, as would be Toadstool’s Tour.

Nintendo offering Wii games digitally at first seemed a bit odd. Based on sales figures, I want to assume almost every person on the planet owned a Wii, and many may have saved their collections. So, why would I buy Super Mario Galaxy 2 digitally if I already own a disc version? I haven’t played the digital version, so I cannot speak to what has been improved – if anything has. Nintendo is reaching out and offering an alternative option for people that 1) don’t own, or perhaps have never owned, and physical copy of Mario Galaxy 2, or 2) people looking to go digital. Obviously, both people exist, and I’m happy the service is here. I would just rather have digital GameCube titles.
