The Last Jedi LEGO Sets will be Popular this Holiday Season

With the release of The Last Jedi last Christmas, and the subsequent release of the Blu Ray and the title on Netflix in the latter half of 2018, Star Wars and LEGO fans have had plenty to get excited about as new sets have hit the market hard, and hit the market fast. Walking down the isles of my local department store, The Last Jedi LEGO sets are being given prominent positions on the selves this holiday season, and for good reason. We had the opportunity to look at two of these sets, thanks to our good friends at The LEGO Group. Let’s check out The First Order AT-ST (75201) and Ahch-To Island Training (75200).

The First Order AT-ST – 75201

Coming in at 370 pieces, the First Order AT-ST is one of the more difficult Star Wars sets to put together, thanks to the plethora of LEGO Technic pieces that require just a bit more precision and understanding to put together. This was still a fairly easy build for my 9 year old son, but my 4 (almost 5) year old had issues getting the correct pieces in the correct places. While both sets are great for playing with regardless of their build difficulty, the First Order AT-ST definitely scales to an older audience when it comes to construction.

If you look at this set purely as a Technic set, there is actually a ton of great pieces here. Nothing is particularly unique, but there are pieces here that would only be available in much larger, much more expensive sets. Thanks to the decision to use Technic, the AT-ST itself makes a great play toy as it bends and moves in all directions, allowing young and old alike to recreate those iconic scenes with BB-8 controlling the machine.

And with the AT-ST comes 3 figures, and the BB-8, so there is plenty of options for playing. There is also an elevator that will help you get BB-8 from the ground into the cockpit of the AT-ST. From top to bottom, it is a fantastic set: fun to build, and fun to play with. It’s rare that sub $40 LEGO sets include 4 figures, and as they often are the most valuable asset to a LEGO set, there is lots to love here with 4 figures on top of the other great features.

While you are not getting any light sabres in this set, you are getting a few of the series more popular figures, including Captain Phasma, Finn, and newcomer to the movie, Rose, in their First Order disguises. Add in a posable At-ST and two shooters that actually work, and you have an excellent toy for kids of all ages – although the recommendation is 8-14!

Ahch-To Island Training – 75200

Although a bit smaller than the AT-ST at only 241 pieces, Ahch-To Island is still a great set for kids of all ages, with buildings to mess around with and two figures to take your game-play experience to the next level. Embark on Jedi training with Rey and Luke Skywalker, and enjoy the sights of Ahch-To Island while you train! What makes this set so unique is that it comes with its own Porg mini-figure, which are not common across the Star Wars sets!

Putting Ahch-To Island Training together was much easier than the AT-ST, and with a bit of help in a few places, my 4 (almost 5) year old son had little trouble getting this set together and ready for play time. There is nothing overly unique about this set, and the best parts are the accessories and minifigures. Included alongside Rey, Luke, and the Porg are all the accessories you would need to create your own island getaway, including a frying pan, fish, a cup, some vegetables, and more. When put together, this set looks fantastic on display, but functions very well in play as well.

For $30.00, what you get is what you would normally get, although I feel the price point is a tad high for the number of pieces in the box. What offsets this is the minifgures. Both Rey and Luke are wonderfully detailed, and both come with their own light sabres which are a always a popular LEGO item for fans of all ages. The Porg, however, takes this set over the top. You won’t find much cheaper ways to get your hands on this fantastic item, so if you are a fan, getting Ahch-To Island Training might be your best bet!

There is a lot to look forward to in 2019, but 2018 has brough us so many fantastic sets. Be sure to check these out, and more, all over on the LEGO website!
