Tetra’s Escape

Tetris is one of my favorite puzzle games of all time. Tetra’s Escape for the Nintendo Switch…has nothing at all to do with Tetris. Yes, there are blocks and shapes that look like Tetris blocks but Tetra’s Escape is a different kind of puzzle game. Is it a good puzzle game though?

The goal of each Tetra’s Escape level is pretty basic: reach the portal at the end of the level. The levels are very small and you always know where to go. The problem is that you don’t always know how to get to the portal. You must use the block creatures provided by changing them into various Tetra shapes. These blocks will get you to the portal, if you create the right shapes to make a path to it.

Tetra’s Escape doesn’t start off hard. The game holds your hand at first and helps you through a few puzzles. And then, it leaves you on your own mostly, occassionally introducing a new element here or there. There is no hint system in Tetra’s Escape and I really wish there was. This game quickly becomes really hard.

Don’t get me wrong: Tetra’s Escape is a good game. The puzzle mechanicsĀ  are solid and work well. I do like a challenge, I just wish a little more help was available when needed.

Control wise, Tetra’s Escape is good. The jumping in this game does feel stiff, but Tetra’s Escape isn’t a platformer and the jumping serves its purpose. Overall, the game can be fun and it plays well.

As for its graphics, Tetra’s Escape is a pretty simple looking game. The graphics are not bad, but not great either. I think this game could be on any system at all, even the 3DS and mobile, and look the same.

Tetra’s Escape is a game you’ll want to download if you like puzzle games, especially challenging ones.

Tetra’s Escape gets a 7.5 out of 10. Its a good game, though it could be even better with a hint system and slightly better graphics. Its still worth a download for puzzle fans!

Thanks to Ratalaika Games for providing a digital code for review. Tetra’s Escape is out now for the Nintendo Switch eshop!
