More Thoughts From Me Special Edition #3: Nintendo Likes to Surprise

Sometimes, I forget that Nintendo likes their surprises. It’ll just seem like an average day and all of sudden, Nintendo of America will make some surprising announcement out of nowhere. Today, we get a big surprise from them. Nintendo announced that they are going to re-release the NES system as the NES Classic Edition. It is a small NES that comes with 30 games built into the system! I was stunned by this news and I can’t stop thinking about the system. And now its time for a new More Thoughts Special Edition about this classic NES and Nintendo’s surprises.

I woke up this morning and, like I usually do, I turned on my 3DS and checked twitter. I saw that the awesome NintenDaan had retweeted Go Nintendo about something. The tweet said Nintendo is re-releasing the NES! What? I checked the article and I couldn’t believe it. An NES with 30 games built-in, a controller, an HDMI cable, and an AC adapter all for the price of a Wii U game. I still couldn’t believe it. I checked Nintendo’s twitter and sure enough, there they were announcing the system. My jaw was on the floor. I couldn’t stop talking to my dad about the system. We have so many memories with the NES.

The NES was my very first system. My dad bought it for the family and he played it almost as much as I did! He loved Tetris especially. We didn’t just own one version of the system either. We ended up getting rid of our first NES (I know, I know) and we ended up getting the new version of the system when it came out. We didn’t have that for very long though. But I have so many memories of that classic system. Playing Super Mario Bros for the first time! Finally getting to play Super Mario Bros 3  after seeing it in the Wizard! Oh and playing Zelda, Castlevania, Metroid, and so many more games. And I’ve bought those games over and over on the Virtual Console too. I’ve never stopped loving that first Nintendo console. In the end, though, you can’t beat playing those games on the NES with the NES controller. This new announcement is something that retro fans will love the most, though people who never played the system before are in for a real treat. Who would have ever guessed that Nintendo was going to do this?!

Whenever we think we know where the Nintendo is going, they throw a curve ball at us. Nintendo loves to surprise. They might be one of the few game companies that manages to get a surprise out every so often without the surprise leaking. Nintendo, of course, has had leaks too, but they’ve had a lot of cool surprises also. I love that about Nintendo. I love these surprises. This mini NES is one of my absolute favorite surprises! And it came out of nowhere! Nobody knew about this! There were no leaks. Hopefully the NX can be so lucky.

Speaking of the NX, I wonder when Nintendo will make that big announcement. I’m not sure if that announcement will top today’s announcement for me. I know what you’re thinking. Its just an old system brought out with pre-loaded games. Like we haven’t seen that before! Yes, Sega, Atari and others have done the same thing. But this is a bit different. This is Nintendo putting out a “retro” system. This could be the start of something amazing if this system sells well (SNES Classic? N64 classic?!). Oh come on, this system will sell well. I’ll be lucky to get my hands on one of these things. I have no idea how many of these systems Nintendo made. I have no idea how many retro fans and potential new fans of the NES are out there. And can you imagine if Nintendo really advertised this thing on TV?! I don’t know if they are planning to market this system a lot or if they’ll just release it and hope for the best. I hope they’ll market it, but this is Nintendo. They don’t have the best recent history with marketing. Still, even if they don’t market it, I think the system will do very well. It would be pretty funny if it sold more than the PS4 or Xbox One. I know I might be dreaming here. Maybe I’m just going overboard.

The NES Classic might come out and not do as well as I think. I think thats the least likely outcome though. Maybe it won’t sell anywhere near the Playstation 4 or Xbox One. Maybe it won’t even sell as well as the Wii U. I don’t know what will happen. I just know that the NES is a fantastic system and the 30 games that are included as pretty great! I mean come on, all the NES Mario games, Zelda 1 and 2, Castlevania 1 and 2, Mega Man 2, FINAL FANTASY, and more! You can’t get a new system with that many great games out of the box. Retro fans will eat it up and possibly some new fans will too. Nintendo may have a hit on their hands (again). Only time will tell.

So what do you think of this NES Classic system? Will you be buying one at launch? Bonus questions: What is your favorite NES game? Is it included in the classic system? Check out this list.

I’ll be back next week with a regular More Thoughts From Me. It’ll be about the Denpa Men, the original AR gotta catch them all game!

More Thoughts From Me is an opinion column. The thoughts presented here are mine and mine alone. I don’t know you anymore if you’re not excited for the NES Classic!
