More Thoughts From Me #126: Time Traveling Through Radiant Historia

Everyone is so obsessed with the Nintendo Switch these days. Don’t get me wrong: I get it. The Nintendo Switch is an awesome system. I play it a lot myself. That said, if you are not still playing your 3DS too, you are really missing out. The 3DS is still going strong and while not as many games are coming out for it, the ones that have been coming are excellent. One such title is Radiant Historia. It is a must play RPG. Let me tell you why.

Radiant Historia was on the DS. I never played it on that system. The game is now available on the 3DS. And its a great game!

I should note, in case you forgot, that I’m a huge fan of time travel stories. Radiant Historia has an excellent time travel story that invovles alternate timeline(s), reliving events and trying to reshape them. The main character in Radiant Historia desperately wants to fix his world and make things better.

The world of Radiant Historia is messed up. Everything, including people, are slowly being turned into sand. Also two of the worlds major nations are at war. And one of the nations is having a rebellion.

Each timeline presented in Radiant Historia is different. However, your actions in one timeline will change things in the other one. Don’t ask me how. Don’t think about it too much. Your head will start to hurt if you do.

There is also a special place you go, exclusive to the 3DS verison, where you can take on missions that will let you visit other potential timelines. The events there will sometimes seem like they could happen in the main two timelines and other times just seem too far flung. The timeline jumping is a lot of fun.

All this talk of timelines and time travel may seem too complicted. It is complicated but the game handles it very well. And the system for visiting the timelines is literally an actual timeline. The timeline is easy to access and easy to follow. Not everyone will enjoy keeping track of two (or more) timelines but I really love it.

Radiant Historia is a must play rpg because of its unique stories. The stories and the characters of the game are so well done. Sure, the game has a fun jrpg battle system and some cool puzzles too, but its the game’s stories that will keep you playing. Radiant Historia is a really well done rpg!

If you love rpgs, especially turn based rpgs, than you should check out Radiant Historia. If you love time travel rpgs (like Chrono Trigger) then you must play this game. You shouldn’t even be reading this article. You should be playing this game already!

Radiant Historia is one example of why the 3DS is still important. Hopefully there will be even more examples on the way.

Have you played Radiant Historia for the 3DS? What do you think of its time traveling plotline(s)?

Next week: Crash Bandicoot is back! I got the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy for the Nintendo Switch this week. Next week I’ll give you my impressions of the game so far. Is the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy for Switch a must buy?

More Thoughts From Me is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed here are mine and mine alone. Wish we could get another Chrono Trigger sequel.
