More Thoughts From Me #23: Meet BoxBoy

He’s a boy who just so happens to be shaped like a box. I am, of course, talking about Nintendo’s 3DS puzzle game called BoxBoy. I recently got the game while it was on sale. Let tell you why you should buy it too.

There are still people who claim Nintendo never does any new games. Despite Splatoon, Rolling Western, Pushmo, and many others, people still want to act like Nintendo only does Mario and Zelda games all the time. When in truth, Nintendo does more new games than many of the third party developers out there. They do more new games than Microsoft ever does. Sony is really the other company I can think of that is trying to put some new games out there. Nintendo, though, is constantly trying new things, whether it be with old franchises or introducing new franchises to the world. I want to talk about one of their new franchises today.

BoxBoy is a puzzle game created by HAL Laboratory (of Kirby fame). The game’s graphics are pretty simple looking, because its characters are boxes and the game only uses black and white as it graphical colors. Yet, the game has a wonderful Nintendo charm about it and the gameplay is definitely not simple.

When the game starts out, BoxBoy is pretty easy but don’t let that fool you. The game gets harder as it goes. If you get too stuck, you can spend some Play Coins on your 3DS to get hints as to what you should do. You may find yourself using these hints a lot, so save up those play coins! BoxBoy is a challenge for sure, but its never not fun. This puzzle game will make you think and make you smile when you figure out one of its puzzles.

Control wise, BoxBoy doesn’t use a lot of buttons. You just the d-pad or the analog stick to move BoxBoy and the Y button to create boxes that’ll help you solve the game’s puzzles. These basic controls will help just about anybody get into Boxboy. The game is newbie friendly, at least a first, and will challenge and surprise you as you go.

If you love puzzle games at all, you should pick up BoxBoy. The game is no longer on sale but its definitely worth buying anyway. And if you play BoxBoy and want more of it, you don’t have long to wait. The second BoxBoy game is coming to the 3DS eshop this very week!

Have you played Boxboy? What do you think of it? Let us know in the comments!

Next week: Metroid Prime Federation Force! It comes out next month. Do I think it looks any good? You’ll find out next week!

More Thoughts From Me is an opinion column. The thoughts provided here are mine and mine alone. I think everybody likes BoxBoy though right? Come on, you know you do!
