Building Bases in Portal Knights

I’ve spent a considerable amount of time building and maintaining a thriving base on the first world in Portal Knights. With the help of family – 2 brothers and a German exchange student to be precise – we have built houses, workshops, farms, and more to house our growing hoards, and to act as a base for all our operations. I’ve found one thing to be very true about these experiences: it is so relaxing. I never thought this type of game would cause me to relax and unwind, but this definitely has.

This building experience would not be as fun without the input and help of the three other players. When I began my base alone, everything looked fairly similar as I obviously fell into a specific building pattern and never pulled out of it. Once I introduced three other members to the base, however, I began to see variety in what was being built. To date, the  four of us have put together homes – one for each player – a workshop that houses our workbench, furnace, anvil, and drafting table – a church where you will find our alter, and a farm for tree harvesting and vegetable growing. We’ve established a great system, and every individual pulls their weight.

We each have our own personal hoards within our homes, but a good portion of the things we find are shared, including copper, iron, and gold. We work together to acquire these goods as a team, so therefore we share these goods. Not everything is great about this multiplayer experience, but for the most part, we have few complaints.

The biggest issue is when one player realizes they are missing a particular resources not available on our current island, we all have to leave in order to find that item. Ideally, I would like if the developers over at 505 Games and Keen would allow players to exist within the same game, but not necessarily within the same world. This would improve the multiplayer experience greatly!

That being said, Portal Knights really is an excellent social game, and I hope people will take advantage of the social offerings if possible. In this case, playing with others is always more fun than playing alone. I cannot wait to see what else comes for this title, as it deserves years of support from both the community and the developers!
