More Thoughts From Me #107: Three Tactical RPGS Attack the Switch

I played Mercenaries  Saga 2 and 3 on the 3DS. I enjoyed the second one a lot, but never could get into the third one for some reason. And yet when Mercenaries Saga Chronicles for the Nintendo Switch was announced, I was excited! The first game had never been released on the 3DS so I didn’t play it. I was excited to play that, play the second one again, and give the third one another chance. Plus, come on, three strategy rpgs in one?! How could I resist that? And now I’ve played some of the first game. What do I think of it so far?

Mercenaries Saga Chronicles is three strategy rpgs in one package. I have, so far, only played one of the games. I started with the first game because i had never played it before!

Mercenaries Saga: Will of the White Lions is a strategy rpg. Like the other games in this franchise, there is no map for the characters to travel around on (think Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics). Instead, in between battles and story, the player is taken to a menu where they can level up characters, equip them, visit a store, and take part in free battles or story battles. The menu is very easy to use. I do wish there was a map to travel, but its not too big of a deal. The gameplay here is a really good!

The gameplay and graphics of Mercenaries Saga will remind you of Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS1 more than Fire Emblem. If you played Tactics, then you should easily be able to pick up Mercenaries gameplay. Some of the battles are easy, while others are bit harder. The gameplay is very solid and I like the graphics too. The story isn’t as good as Final Fantasy Tactics, but its not bad.

While Mercenaries Saga Chronicles isn’t as classic as Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS1, it is a really good. In fact, it is three really good games for the price of one! And it may be the closest we ever get to having anything like the original Tactics on the Switch.

I highly recommend this game to fans of tactical rpgs. Its a good time killer.

I can’t wait to check out the other games!

Next week: I got Dragon Quest Builders and I’ve been playing with it for a little. I loved the demo! What do I think of the actual game? I’ll give you my impressions next week on More Thoughts From Me!

More Thoughts From Me is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed here are mine and mine alone. I do wish Square Enix would bring Final Fantasy Tactics to the Nintendo Switch!
