More Thoughts From Me #54: Why Do I Want An NES Classic Edition?

The NES Classic Edition has been rare since day one. I couldn’t get one then and I still don’t have one now. I had the money at day one, but don’t have that now so couldn’t buy one even if I could find one. But why would I even want an NES Classic Edition? I’ve bought most of those games over and over again through the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U. Heck, I use to own the original NES. So what’s the big deal? Why do I want the system? I consider this and if I’ll ever get one in this More Thoughts From Me.

” You know there’s only three right?” I was stunned. Gamestop only had three NES Classic Editions?! THREE. This was the launch day of the mini system and they only had three! And there was already three people waiting for a system. To underscore this, a Gamestop employee came over to us and pointed to the other three people and said “One, two, three. You all were here first so you get one.”

I figured Gamestop would have five, six or seven of the systems. I saw the three people and figured we could just wait with them and get one. Nope.

We went to our local Wal-mart after that and they were completely sold out. They sold their systems at midnight. Of course, when we got home, we checked online. Nobody had the system. We waited for a bit after that, but couldn’t get an NES Classic Edition and so gave up. We spent the money we had set back for the system.

You still can’t find NES Classic Editions anywhere. Even if I could find one, I don’t have the money anymore. Nintendo had a sure sell with me but since they didn’t put out enough systems, I couldn’t give them my money.

Why do I even want an NES Classic though? Reggie recently said that they thought the system would only appeal to lapsed Nintendo/gaming fans. Why would someone like me, someone who has bought most of the games on the NES Classic before, want this system?

Well, you could say nostalgia plays a big part in the reason I want an NES Classic. I had the originalĀ NES. I don’t have one anymore though. I remember how cool it was playing games on the system. I love that old controller. Playing those games on the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U is good, but playing it on a system with a controller like the old one?! Absolutely the best experiance you can get. It goes beyond just nostagia though.

The NES Classic Edition is the ultimate collectable for Nintendo fans. Here isĀ a bunch of classic games on hardware thats a lot like the old system. And then you had new editions to the hardware like suspend points and a fancy menu. If you’re a Nintendo fan, why wouldn’t you want an NES Classic? The system would appeal to new fans and old fans. Its a collectable, there’s nostalgia appeal, but there’s also appeal to people who never played the old system. Its a must have piece of hardware. How could Nintendo underestimate the NES Classic like this? I don’t know. I still don’t understand this. And most of all, I wonder if I’ll ever have one of the systems.

Is there an NES Classic in my future? I kind of doubt it. I don’t see having the money for one anytime soon or more importantly even being able to find one. There’s games like the new Zelda and Fire Emblem to get next too. I may have to just let the NES Classic go. I’m disappointed by this, but hey, I’ll live. I have played many of these games. It would have been wonderful to have a NES Classic. I still want one, don’t get me wrong, but as I write this, I start to realize that I don’t need one. There are needs and there are wants. The NES Classic is definitly a want. It might be an impossible want though.

So what about you all out there? Did you get an NES Classic Edition? Please let me know in the comments.

Next week: R.I.P Wii U. The final Nintendo Wii U game, Breath of the Wild, is coming in March. There are still some Indie games coming, such as Earthlock: Festival of Magic, but most of the indies are backing away from the system. I’m a huge Wii U fan. How do I feel about all this? Well, if you’ve read any of my previous Wii U related columns you probably have an idea. I’ll talk about the life and death of the Wii U next week.

More Thoughts From Me is an opinion column. The thoughts provided here are mine and mine alone. I feel like playing some Super Mario Bros now.
