Next Sea of Thieves BETA Will Allow You to Travel Between Xbox One and PC

According to a post on the Sea of Thieves website, players in the next BETA will be able to travel between the Xbox One and the PC, picking up right from where they left off. In an early beta release of the game, the Xbox Play Anywhere feature was activated for Sea of Thieves, as well as cross play, allowing those on Xbox One to play with people on PC, and vice versa. With this new announcement today, those with an affinity for both the Xbox One and the PC will be able to play their Sea of Thieves game on either platform, without losing any progress. Check out the post below for more information, and be sure to head over to the Sea of Thieves website and preorder the game!

For the longest time, we’ve been talking about why Xbox Play Anywhere is so important to us on Sea of Thieves. In addition, last August, we turned on cross play in our Technical Alpha, enabling Xbox One and Windows 10 PC players to be able to play together, and it’s been an active feature ever since!

Being able to play with friends on a different platform really is magical the first time you experience it, especially if it’s with a friend you’ve never been able to game with before. Breaking down barriers and allowing more players to play together is a key goal for Sea of Thieves, and it’s great to see how well cross play has been received by our community.

As we head into Closed Beta, our next step is to fully enable Xbox Play Anywhere. We’re delighted to announce that starting in Closed Beta on January 24th, you can jump between any device and continue where you left off, whether that’s a Windows 10 PC, Windows 10 laptop, Xbox One, Xbox One S or Xbox One X. And with cross play, you’ll always have a friend to sail with, regardless of where they play.

This is a huge milestone for us as we head towards launch because giving players the freedom to choose how they play lies at the heart of Sea of Thieves. This also means that if you pre-order Sea of Thieves digitally, you’ll have Xbox Play Anywhere access from launch day on March 20th. You’ll be able to play on any device, at any time, and swap devices to your heart’s content!

We’d also like to use this as an opportunity to ask YOU to help us make the PC experience even better for launch. For example, do you have an old gaming PC, or does a relative have a shiny new laptop with only an iGPU? Jump into the Sea of Thieves Closed Beta on these devices and let us know in the Forums how you get on! Our Video Settings go all the way down to 540p, and our Graphics Settings go all the way down to “Cursed” (yes, we may have taken some creative licence here!), but we really do want to know how you get on as our rendering team’s ambition is “to get Sea of Thieves running on a potato” – whatever that means!

Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing you on the high seas, regardless of device – and with that perhaps some scores to settle.

– Ted “Red Rage” Timmins, PC Design Lead
